countdown

all the world's a stage

empty today, full tomorrow and saturday

graduation 2009, woot!

Today I went to graduation rehearsal and out to lunch with some English-major friends. It's odd to see the campus so deserted, especially when this time last week everyone was practically living there. Ah, but finally we are free at last! (At least for the summer). Graduation is Saturday morning at 8:00 am, feel free to drop by, I'll save you a seat!

critical discourse

Life is funny. At the beginning of the semester I pressed my slacks so as to be sure to look professional in all of my classes. I went to bed early, kept organized, felt like I was in charge of my destiny. Now, at semester's end, I'm living on coffee, staying up until the a.m., wearing blue jeans for the second time and some days it's just easier to knot the hair and wear flip-flops. I feel quite achieved when I even know what day of the week it is! 33 days until graduation...it seems like forever! Now I'm off to find me one of those countdown widgets...that'll help me keep track!
Have a good week everyone!

weekend forecast

Week one of school is finished, only fourteen more to go...lol. I am headed out of town tomorrow for the weekend to attend my first English teacher's convention! I have my Brenda Photo Challenge pictures scheduled to post, but I won't be around until late Sunday to comment on everyone else's. Have fun looking for "signs of spring"...I had to look high and low, but it was fun!

back-to-school

That's me in kindergarten! Second row, fourth from the left!

I start back to school today and boy does that make me happy! This was the l-o-n-g-e-s-t break I have ever had. I almost didn't know what to do with myself. I must have the cleanest house on the block. I've read numerous books, watched several movies, went shopping, worked in the garden, visited family and friends, cooked, knitted, walked, wrote, and drank lots of coffee! I am so ready to plunge into the spring's academic challenges. I only have three classes, but two of the classes I had to get special permission to take together (what an ordeal!) and the third class requires additional work in the public schools, so it's really like having four classes. I am #2 on the waitlist for the most important class...this worries me...but I think that's not too bad of a spot to be in...I should be OK (optimism is a good thing right?). Blogging will be sporadic I'm sure, so I will probably be posting lots of Random Pictures with very few words and relying on all of you to fill in the gaps. I'll still be visiting each of you regularly ( some habits are hard to break). I've got my backpack, check. Books, check. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich, check. Thermos of coffee, check. Pencils, check. I'm good to go! Have a beautiful day wherever on the planet you are standing ~ and remember...

just ducky

I thought you might want to see this year's Spring line of ducklings...aren't they cute?

I thought about Phyllis when I took the bottom picture...it reminded me of her painting.

When the kids were little we had a pet duck named Malibu for awhile and if I can figure out how to work the new scanner I'll share some adorable pictures of that time. Kristin use to pull him around in a little red wagon and he followed her everywhere. We got him when he was just born and raised him until he was full grown...then we introduced him to his own kind. Incidently, do you know how to tell a male from a female in the duck world? The white duck in the top of the picture is a female because her tail is straight...the male's tail feathers curl back.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend~

far away fridays

Sweet friends, I’m afraid I’ve depleted my stack of vacation pictures on CD that I could easily upload to my blog and since I do not have a scanner, I do not have the means to share what other pictures I have…so I will have to be resourceful to continue participating in “far away Fridays”, but for today I am sharing what might not be so far away to me, but is certainly far away for you…I drive about 17 miles to school (one way) everyday…not too far, but the campus is beautiful, so I thought I might take you on a little tour. There are quite a few pictures and I am turning the pages rather quickly, so try not to blink for the next minute or so and you can accompany me on a typical day's worth of sights...if you were here, we'd stop in and enjoy a cup of Peet's coffee along the way!

THE Goose

I woke up this beautiful morning to the sounds coming from a gaggle of geese flying over the house. They have such a distinctive sound. It brings to mind one particular goose that has made his residence at school for the past few months. The landscape is beautiful and one of the man-made lakes with a fountain hosts a variety of seasonal ducks and geese. In early Spring it is very common to arrive at school and witness new baby chicks getting a feel for the water. Their fuzzy little bodies stay close behind their mother and as the Spring progresses into Summer it is interesting to watch how quickly they grow. This year there must have been at least a dozen sets of families to watch. Passing by on a daily basis always provides an opportunity for observation and pleasant surprises. Of the many birds that flock there, white ducks and Mallards are the most prominant with a few groups of Canadian Geese. There just so happened to be one lone gray goose who made his stay seemingly permanent as he took particluar joy in earning the nickname "The Mafia Leader". In the beginning he lead his gang of three white ducks around the campus and across the busy street to the apartments. He seemed to take special pride in stopping traffic and he made it quite known that he ruled the roost in this particular gang. I was not so lucky to have frequent run ins with this goose of uncanny temperament and untimely chases. His followers decreased to two when one of them obtained a wing injury and could no longer follow along. He was never heard from again. The Mafia Leader was actually a very handsome goose with perfect features. He often moved quickly out of the water and into my path to display an attitude of daring confrontation. I began to think it was actually my black book bag he despised as it was often what seperated he and I. I learned to drop it with measured accuracy in self-defense so as not to be nipped by this aggressive feathered ring leader. The three birds always traveled together but the dominance of the goose, although entertaining on most days, kept me alert on my walk to and from class. I have often warned a parent or two who innocently had their toddler holding out bread that this goose might eat small children. He always had a cocky gleem in his eye as I walked past to let me know he was watching me and although he has chased me a time or two and provoked a little wear and tear on the bottom of my book bag, I still enjoyed his pompous and assuming role as my superior. It will be interesting to see if he returns this year. I'm quite sure I will know him from the others. I just hope his influence does not reach a population greater than two or three or we will all be getting to class a little quicker!
