Sprouse Reitz...they were everywhere
in the western states.
I found this yardstick recently
in an antique store.
At first I laughed.
Then I had to have it.
Now I'm trying to balance my joy
with the reality of finding a part
of me in an antique store.
Sprouse Reitz was my first real job
outside of babysitting and packing
peaches and nectarines in the sticky
hot orchards of the central valley.
Sprouse Reitz employees were like family to me.
We swapped recipes, pulled pranks,
and most of them were at my wedding.
I worked in the yardage department
so imagine where a great deal of my paycheck went!
I remember the popcorn...
the glass dividers on the shelves...
chasing hamsters down the aisles...
those were the days
and now I have a little yardstick
souvenir to remind me!

We had Sterlings here in the south. Your post brought back lots of memories of shopping there.
We had the usual... Woolworths, Kresges.
Those little trips back are so nice.
We had TG&Y stores for our little 5 and dime stores. I have not heard of Sterlings, but that doesn't mean they were here. I was pretty sheltered you know.
Yes I do remember Sprouse Reitz, it was just two blocks from where we lived. We would walk there to get many things. Ours had a candy counter and I remember my getting a half pound of peanut clusters about once a week.
I got all my Christmas gifts there and my oldest son bought his first bike with his own money there.
Memories...
we lived in northern az when all five girls were little....and that is where we did so much of our shopping.....sprouse reitz and yellowfront!!! if we really had big shopping to do, we went to flagstaff...but otherwise.... :)
wonderful memories for me and for my girls!
hugs sweet friend.

That's so fun. We had TG&Y stores like Lisa. I remember my mom giving me a nickel I think, and I walked down the sidewalk and bought a candy bar. Once in an antique store I saw a set of kitchen canisters that looked so familiar and then I realized they were identical to the ones my mom had in our kitchen when I was growing up. It is amazing the things you find.
I got my coffee in the mail! Thank you again so much! It smelled so good when I opened the package and it's delicious. Thank you for your thoughtful note too.
We had Woolworth's during my youth, and it was quite a treat to go up and down the aisles, looking at all the treasures for sale. LOL! Glad that you found a keepsake.
I'm sorry that I missed your giveway while I was on vacation. But I am happy to see that Karen won and even featured it on her blog! hahaha...
Hope you are doing well, and I enjoy hearing about your stories about your homeless friends.
Sweet post. I really enjoyed it. xoxo Nita
We had Kresges, Woolworths, and Lee's Drugstore. Our Mom took us to Lee's about every two weeks to get a hambuger there. I miss that dime store.
