project

This is a project I would like to finish as soon as my semester break arrives. It had about five layers of paint in various colors....white, cream, gold, light blue, cream again....remnants of those who came before me.
It frames my bathroom medicine cabinet....I think I want to stain it, but I'm wondering how to properly preserve the swirly design in the wood.
Don't laugh...I thought about using an emery board to sand out the nooks and crannies, but realizing that was both silly and not to mention it would take me forever, I thought I would ask for suggestions...the wood itself is about forty years old. To some degree I have most of the paint removed, but now I am lost!

first joni....bryan said to give you his condolences :)....actually he suggested paint stripper...and a wire brush....but to use the wire brush very carefully....as it can damage the wood....and i think you said you already used paint remover....other wise? there are a LOT of those nooks and crannies, aren't there? it is a beautiful frame!
hoping you get some wonderful, magical suggestions....but that was his! :)
hugs,
kimberly

Kimberly thanks for consulting the master...I will try the wire brush and A LOT of patience...I actually have TWO of these to do, but one at a time...with all the layers of paint I didn't really know how intricate the details were, but I'll give it a shot...I'll keep you posted!

Annette, this frames my medicine cabinet in my bathroom....the kids have one just like it in theirs...came with the house and I'd just like a change, but it sounds like I'm going to have to work really hard for this one...that's ok, it will probably be good therapy!

With all of the advances in products, I would not trust my old knowledge of techniques from yesterday. I would choose, instead, to pack it down to your nearest Home Depot or similar large store. (I emphasize large because they get the updates on current developments by manufacturers and have a fairly good measure of "schooling" on the topic.) Do make the extra effort to go to more than one for input. The damage to that beautiful wood is easily done ... and often impossible to reverse.

love You lots, Dear Joni!

Good luck and we'll look forward to seeing it done one day :)
